A powder horn I recently completed.
This horn is a tribute to the Battle of Lake Erie, a pivotal moment in the War of 1812. It features a quote from Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s letter to President Madison, deeply carved into the horn. Also depicted are three of Perry’s nine ships, along with a federal eagle framed in a Tansel-style cartouche—a design popular in that period.
Of note:
-The quote is by Oliver Hazard Perry
-Ships are the Lawrence, Perry’s flag ship (brig), the Tigress (a schooler) and the Trippe (a sloop)
-The steel loop is cleated over inside the base plug and the hole is sealed with paper glued inside the plug, as was historically done
