Once upon a time, around the 1740s -1750s, bottles were placed in the cellar of George Washington’s Mount Vernon with various contents to be preserved… namely cherry bounce. Left and forgotten ….

Fast forward to today, as our country prepares for the 250th celebration of being founded, and these same bottles have been discovered , unearthed, and studied. "To our knowledge, this is an unprecedented find, and nothing of this scale and significance has ever been excavated in North America ... It’s so appropriate that these bottles have been unearthed shortly before the 250th anniversary of the United States."

- Douglas Bradburn, Mount Vernon President & CEO

Renowned glass artist Phil Gilson was invited to study the artifacts in person and has begun a limited production of these as reproductions for Mount Vernon as well as other fine institutions.

We have been lucky enough to be included on the short list of purveyors. The prototype bottle will debut at the upcoming Fair At New Boston this coming weekend where we begin taking orders. In November we will collect these from the maker and distribute the orders.

The maker’s notes describe these as:

-Recreation of a transitional mallet bottle circa 1740-1750

-Bottle glass - amber- recycled

-Applied ring

-Dip molded

-Shaping block molded

-Jacked bottom push up

-Made by Phil Gilson 2024

It REALLY doesn’t get better than this.
